Finding Community in the Postpartum Period

There are many ways to take care of yourself after you’ve had a baby join your family. One of the most important pieces of postpartum wellness is finding community- in person is definitely better than online in our opinion! In a season of life in which it is loneliness, isolation, and sleep deprivation are taking over, being a part of something bigger and finding like-minded individuals to talk to is essential for mental wellbeing!

How do I find community?

It’s hard to find community in our society- especially when you are new to an area. Here are some easy ways to connect with other new or expecting parents in the Boulder & Denver areas.

  1. Classes Did you take a birth education or lactation class? Your classmates are wonderful resources AND they are a small part of your community. Asking one of them out for a walk or tea can be a great way to add community into your life. You could also look for postpartum exercise classes which is a great way to get your body moving and meet new parents.

  2. Social Media: I know a lot of folks have a love/hate relationship with social media, but it is a fantastic way to meet new parents in your area. Oftentimes there will already be mom’s/parent’s groups on Facebook. There are also a lot of different groups for specific activities and hobbies (ex. Adventure Mom’s of Colorado)

  3. Postpartum Groups: There are a lot of different postpartum groups and meetups throughout Colorado! Sanctuary Doulas + Family Care offers a couple of them. Drop in to our Feeding Circle aka Milk Cafe where you can do weighted feeds, connect with our amazing feeding specialists, and connect with new parents. Can’t make it out of the house? We know how hard that can be with a little one! No worries, you can tune in to our Online Meditation Group. Want to connect with others AND learn how to massage your baby? We have a class for that as well.  Check out our Events page for more info.
