Choosing the Right Care Provider

Finding a provider can be intimidating, but is very important to ensure you have a birth experience you are hoping for. Whether it be a midwife or OB, the person who is helping you deliver your baby can make or break your experience! Here is a blog to help you narrow down your options. First and foremost, how does this provider make you feel? Do they look you in the eyes and answer your questions? Are they willing to advocate for the birth you want? Another sign of a caring provider is if they ask YOU questions about your goals and wishes.

Here is a list of questions to ask your potential provider:

  1. Will you allow me to labor at home as long as possible, even if my waters have released? (if having hospital or birth center birth)

  2. What is your transfer rate?

  3. What is your csection rate?

  4. Will you allow me to eat and drink throughout labor?

  5. Can I labor in the tub?/birth in tub?

  6. Can my sister/mom/other family member be present during the birth?

  7. If a csection is necessary or wanted, can my doula be present in the OR with me?

  8. Can my partner help catch the baby?

  9. What is your philosophy on birth?

  10. How many years have you been practicing?

Trust, care, kindness, and empathy are important when choosing your provider! Remember that you can change care at any point in your pregnancy.
